Poothotta – A broken piece of the heavenly backwaters of Kerala

Poothotta is a beautiful green nook just a few kilometers away from the urban chaos. Kochi city is within 25 kms. Backwater, small islands, mangrove shores and fish farm are some attractions of this serene village which is still raw and less crowded. The villagers use waterways also for transportation. The Kerala state water transportation services are active here; so you can choose waterways also to reach and roam around. You can also cruise in the private boats; the experience would be nothing less than the famous Alleppey house boat ride. If you can take a small Shikkara boat, that’s more advantageous, they will take you to the narrow alleys totally covered with trees. I ensure you that it will be heavenly. These boats are roofed and provide enough seating which is actually sufficient to see this place around in two or three hours, and comparatively cheap too.

Poothotta Lake Houseboat

Along the watersides there are families living. The houses and people are adapted to the water surrounding. Observing a different perspective and style of life is really enlightening; where every family has a water courtyard with parking spaces for their private boat. You can see narrow boats tied in front of every house. Just like we park our bike or car in the garage. The sight of their livelihood is also interesting. How easily women, men and kids row on their boat and do the fishing, shopping, businesses and do their daily chores.
It is best if you can carry some snacks and drinks, particularly if you are riding with kids. Don’t forget to choose a shady time for the ride. Water doesn’t always mean chilly!!

Poothotta Lake

If you think you would get bored in the ride carry a fishing rod and have a catch, boat people will assist you if you need. Most surprising thing in Poothotta is the ride BREAK. The boat will stop in middle of the backwater where water is just a few feet deep. You can step down from boat and feel the water and can swim too. This phenomenon happens only in some seasons when the water is less. That is mostly from January to the first rain of monsoon. But you know what I was thinking, how beautiful the rain would be from this place!!! (But may not be safe enough).

Poothotta Lake Boating

Poothotta is actually perfect for a one-day getaway. If you intend to stay, there is an elegant resort in the island where you soak in all the beauty of Poothotta backwater including the sunset. Don’t forget to try the Kerala local delicacies. Rice meal and Karimeen fry is a must try. Go and get it done folks!!

How to reach:
Poothotta is the border of Ernakulum and Kottayam districts of Kerala. So that’s the roadways.
Thripunithura railway station is the closest if you are choosing a train.
Cochin international airport is the closest airport.
And there is waterway option also (limited).
Enjoy!!!
